Meth Top Problem, but War Being Won, AG Says

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales told a group of prosecutors that the nation is winning the battle against methamphetamine use, but he also said that meth has surpassed marijuana as the nation's most dangerous drug, the Associated Press and Kennebec (Maine) Journal reported July 19.

"In terms of damage to children and to our society, meth is now the most dangerous drug in America, having surpassed marijuana," Gonzales said.

At the National District Attorneys Association summer meeting in Portland, Maine, Gonzales pointed to progress in getting other countries to control the precursor chemicals used to make meth and stressed that law enforcement and communities must work together to fight the drug. "We must get the neighbors involved," he said.

Gonzales noted that meth-lab seizures had fallen in states that passed laws limiting the sale of over-the-counter medicines containing pseudoephedrine, which can also be used to make meth. "These results are dramatic and they're real," Gonzales said. "They show progress
