Idaho Mulls Pointed Anti-Meth Campaign

Taking a cue from the Montana Meth Project, officials in neighboring Idaho are considering whether to launch a public-service ad campaign depicting the harsh consequences of methamphetamine use, the Associated Press reported Jan. 31.

Idaho Gov. Butch Otter said he wants to meet with Tom Siebel, the billionaire who founded and funded the Montana project in cooperation with Montana attorney general Mike McGrath. Otter said he would like to see the Montana campaign replicated in Idaho; the hard-hitting ads depict a variety of meth-related horror stories, such as an image of a dirty bathroom stall with the caption: "No one thinks they'll lose their virginity here. Meth will change that."

Idaho officials say they plan to line up local sponsors to pay for the campaign. In Montana, officials are seeking a mix of state and federal grants to sustain the Montana Meth Project, credited with raising perceptions about the dangers of meth use among state youth and cutting consumption and crime.
